Jetty Partners CEO and Founding Principal Jordan Arnold spoke with CNBC’s Hayley Cuccinello about the growing use of WhatsApp and other messaging platforms within family offices, and the security considerations that can accompany their convenience.
The discussion highlights an important distinction between secure communications and controlled information. Even when messages are encrypted, sensitive conversations may remain stored on personal devices and outside the family office’s control, including after an employee leaves. Jordan discussed situations in which contentious departures have created the risk that former employees could retain or threaten to disclose sensitive communications.
For family offices, the issue is less about avoiding the tools people naturally use and more about understanding where sensitive communications reside, who owns or has a legal right to retain them, and what happens to that information when an employee or other trusted party leaves. Encryption can protect a message in transit, but it does not necessarily resolve who controls the copies that remain.
